If you know the real truth about Maredu tree ..

Bilvachettu (in Sanskrit) is an ancient Ayurvedic tree famous for its spiritual and medicinal significance. It is widely used by Hindus and has been described in Indian literature since Vedic times. It is one of the ten root (ten root group) herbs. Its ternate leaves are called “Tripatra” (3 leaves), also commonly known as “Shiva Dhruma”. Hindus usually offer these leaves in prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with a tree growing near the temple.

The Bilwa tree is said to contain the essence of celestial light. Also, every part of the tree is very powerful. In the Skanda Purana (the largest Mahapurana, the style of the eighteen Hindu scriptures), Bilva is considered to be one of the Kalpavruksha, the Kshirasagara Mantana. The Padma Purana states that offering Bilwa leaves by chanting a mantra to Lord Shiva brings good luck.

Bilwa (botanical name: Eagle Mermelos) belongs to the Rutaceae family. It is a medium-sized deciduous thorny plant, up to 30-40 feet tall, the fruits are sub-spherical in shape, large grapefruit or larger in size, with a smooth wooden shell with green, gray or yellow peel. The Bilwa tree is native to India and is widely found in Asia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Thailand.


Unripe bilwa fruit helps to cure disorders caused by imbalance in rheumatism and phlegm bugs. Due to its anti-hemorrhagic, bitter and intense taste and anti-inflammatory properties, it helps to increase bile and significantly enhances digestive and other metabolic functions.

Peptic ulcer: Bilwa leaf infusion is considered to be the best medicine for peptic ulcer. The leaves are soaked in water overnight and in the morning – this water is filtered and used as a beverage. It can be eaten daily and relieves indigestion, sinusitis, colds, gastritis and indigestion.

Arthritis: Bilwa stem bark can also be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, colds and coughs. Its bleeding and intense taste is absorbent and acts as an excellent carminative. It can also help with heart problems.

Lack of appetite: Bilwa root tastes sweet and increases appetite. If appetite is reduced, 1 tablespoon of dried bilwa leaves mixed with a glass of buttermilk should be eaten daily for 3 days.

Respiratory problems: The oil extracted from the bile helps in curing respiratory problems including asthma and colds.

Diabetes: Bilwa leaves effectively control blood sugar levels in one’s body. The juice from the crushed bilwa leaves is rich in laxatives, which help in producing the insulin needed to control sugar levels.
