Bella is made with sugarcane in northern India. Jaggery, no matter what part of India you are from, is an integral part of our food culture. What most people don’t realize is that jaggery, which is more popular in the making of sweets, also has enormous health benefits to give.

Jaggery is a natural and healthy sweetener compared to sugar so it is considered to be very high in minerals.

Jaggery is rich in calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium and phosphorus and also contains zinc, copper, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin. Studies show that jaggery contains B vitamins, certain plant proteins and phytochemicals and antioxidants. It is not surprising that eating jaggery, especially in winter, has many benefits. Here are some health benefits you can get by including more jaggery in your diet.

1. Cleanses the whole body

According to a 2009 study in Food Chemistry, the antioxidants and minerals in jaggery give it a cytoprotective property, meaning it clears mucus from the lungs and cleanses the lungs and digestive system from the inside out. In fact, eating jaggery at least once a day can detoxify your entire body.

2. Improves digestion

Jaggery usually has a reason to eat it as a dessert after a meal. It stimulates the intestines and helps in the release of digestive enzymes. Ginger is also believed to be great for people suffering from constipation and other digestive problems.

3. Prevents anemia

As mentioned earlier, jaggery is rich in minerals such as iron and phosphorus, which help the body produce hemoglobin. For those who are low in iron in their diet or at risk of iron deficiency anemia, jaggery is an effective preventative measure.
